4 Bed Bug Myths You Should Ignore

No person wants to live in a home infested by bed bugs. So, naturally, most people take the time to educate themselves on effective ways to keep these insects away. The problem, however, is that some of the information they find is untrue. There are plenty of myths that can make a person more susceptible to an infestation and less likely to rid one once started.

Myth: Bed Bugs Are Limited to Beds

If you look around your bed and you do not see any sign of these tiny insects, do not automatically assume you do not have an infestation. Naturally, people believe that bed bugs are only found on beds given their name. Yet, the reality is that these bugs can be found in any area where there is frequent human activity, including chairs and couches. If you suspect an infestation, you want to look all over your home.

Myth: Bed Bugs Mean Dirt

People often equate an insect infestation with clutter or poor housekeeping practices. However, just like many other insects, it is not uncleanliness that brings bed bugs into a home. Instead, these traveling bugs are often introduced into the home from travel and eventually spread from there. So, whether a person cleans their home daily or hardly ever, the risk of an infestation is about the same. It is worth noting, however, that uncleanliness and clutter can make it harder to rid a home of an infestation.

Myth: Bed Bugs Cannot Migrate

An issue that can make it harder for a person to rid their home of these bugs is the belief that these bugs remain in one area. Bed bugs cannot fly or jump, but they can move around by other means of transport. Whether it is a purse, backpack, blanket, or another object, these bugs can latch onto these items and migrate to other areas of your home. If you have an infestation in one area, there is a high probability you also have problems in other areas.

Myth: Bed Bug Control Is Simple

Another issue that can create a challenge with eliminating these bugs is believing the idea that ridding an infestation is as simple as removing the infested piece of furniture from the home. Remember, bed bugs can travel. Not only can they be in other areas, but often the solution is to target the bugs, not to get rid of furniture. For complete removal, you want to work with a pest control professional.

Rather than worry about misinformation, speak with a bed bug pest control company.
