Discover 3 Effective Ways To Keep Pigeons Off Your Rooftop

Pigeons roosting or nesting on the roof of your home or business can result in several different problems. Not only can the large flocks of these wild birds be unsightly, the waste that they produce can also damage the exterior of your building as well as the paint on any vehicles parked in the line of fire. Feral pigeons can also be host to many different diseases. When considering all of these factors, it becomes quite easy to see why pigeon control is such an important part of any pest control plan. Continue reading to learn more about some of the ways you can help to deter pigeons from making your rooftop their new favorite nesting spot.

Deter Landing With Anti-Bird Spikes Or Sticky Traps

Both anti-bird spike strips and sticky traps work to deter pigeons from landing on your rooftop. While these deterrents will not actually hurt the birds, they will make your rooftop far less desirable. Spike strips accomplish this by simply making it uncomfortable for the pigeons to remain on your roof for any extended period of time. Sticky traps accomplish this same goal by forcing the birds to work hard to free themselves from the thin layer of glue that coats the surface of your roof. Once the bird has successfully freed themselves, they will avoid landing on your roof a second time in order to avoid the sticky surface.

Prevent Nesting With Parallel Wires Or Mesh Netting

Another very effective form of pigeon control is to prevent these birds from nesting on your rooftop through the use of physical barriers such as parallel wires or mesh bird nesting. These barriers prevent pigeons from roosting by making it impossible for them to land directly on your roof. While this form of pigeon control is very effective, some people will find the addition of netting or wires to be rather unattractive. Consequently, this option is most commonly utilized on industrial properties where curb appeal is less important.

Promote A Flight Response With Decoys

Like most species, pigeons have many natural predators. When these predators are present, pigeons will experience a natural flight response in order to preserve their life and avoid danger. The use of decoys helps to steer pigeons clear of your property by tricking them into thinking the area is already inhabited by one of their predators. For the best results when using this form of pigeon control, it is important to move the location of your decoys on a regular basis. If you choose not to move your decoys around, there is a good chance that the pigeons will begin to ignore their presence over the course of time.
